TTRPG

What in the world is a TTRPG???

A tabletop role-playing game (typically abbreviated as TRPG or TTRPG), also known as a pen-and-paper role-playing game, is a form of role-playing (RPG) in which the participants describe their characters' actions through speech. Participants determine the actions of their characters based on their characterization, and the actions succeed or fail according to a set formal system of rules and guidelines. Within the rules, players have the freedom to improvise; their choices shape the direction and outcome of the game.

The terms pen-and-paper and tabletop are generally only used to distinguish this format of RPG from other formats, since neither pen and paper nor a table are strictly necessary.

What do I need to play it?

That depends on the game you are wanting to play.

Generally you will need the game system rule book(s).   A pen/pencil&eraser (my preferred medium as you'll be marking down and erasing and changing what you just wrote down repeatedly), paper to set up your character sheet to keep track of stats and items you will accumulate and whatever the Dungeon Master or referee is required to have (usually more papers and information than the players do).  As well as a group of friends to play with.  OR, you can get a instructional booklet that tells you how to referee, Dungeon Master, your own games.

I don't have a good imagination!

Originally TTRPG's  used theater of the mind and left the world building up to the players to imagine what kind of world they were adventuring in.  Its still a fun and extremely viable way to play these games.

Over the years the genre has been growing and expanding.   People have been using what ever materials they could get their hands on to create their own custom boards with their own custom made terrain to adventure on.  There are thousands of websites, youtube channels, twitch streams, etc.  that are dedicated in supplying premade maps and buildings and trees and miniatures to even making your own custom play aids.

I have posted a bunch of links all over this site that I think are very helpful in finding where to get some miniature figurines and terrain to play on as well as making your own.

What is papercraft?

Papercraft is the art of making diaramas and TTRPG gaming terrain as well as game miniatures exclusively out of paper.  you can buy high quality print and play terrain and miniatures or you can find an enormous quantity of free products online as well.  You typically print, cut, fold and glue these together to form whatever construct you are building.   It's fast and not as time consuming as crafting your own game aids, but it can have limitations in my experience depending on how you are going to game.

What is terrain crafting?

Terrain crafting is a hobby in the world of Tabletop gaming (whether its for RPG's, Wargaming, model railroad building or diarama building) where people take all sorts of materials and craft worlds for which the model miniatures (player characters and non-playable characters) enhabit.  Materials you can craft things out of is never ending.  Cardboard, foam, food boxes, plastic containers, etc.   In the Youtube section of this site I have posted links to a large assortmen of youtube channels that can show you just how to get started in this hobby and give you ideas for whatever game you want to play.... hopefully Zombie Survivor!!

What are miniatures?

Miniatures are small models of trees, houses, vehicles, ground and water, people and animals.   In the tabletop gaming community when someone says "mini" or "mini's" they are usually referring to miniature models of people or creatures or animals.   People paint them and use them to help bring their game world to life.   It helps alot of people who aren't very imaginative and cannot visualize the story that the referee or DM is telling them.  Having mini's and terrain brings people into the game more.  Especially if they can paint their own mini of their character they have created.
